She wants to run with me.

It was a simple question for my daughter….but one that made my heart smile and filled me with so much pride.  She hadn’t even done anything yet, but she asked if I would help her get started on a running program!!

So so soooo happy!

She has said many times she wanted to run, but then always backed away from doing it.  She is at the age where not being the best or putting herself out in a place where she might look a little silly or not be #1 isn’t something she is comfortable doing.

Grandma U, Piper and I at Trick or Feet 5K in October…post meltdown.

The first time she “ran” with me was in October.  She was signed up for the Kids 1 mile and I ran the 5K (along with my mother –in-law, who also has embraced running…its contagious)   It was cold and windy….it was cold for me so I knew Piper was going to be miserable, and she was.  She didn’t want to do it…she threw a MASSIVE fit…as in screaming, crying, yelling, begging, pleading…all.of.it.  Definitely not one of her more mature days but whatever…she signed up…she was running.  And she did….I may or may not have dragged her around the track (literally) to get it done, but she got it done…crying for the first 2 laps, whining through the 3rd and almost laughing in the 4th.  By the time we got done and took our picture, she was asking “when the next one was”.

I haven’t let her do anything since because it needed to be on her terms.  Well she finally said she wanted to give it a try, and run WITH me…not the kiddo’s mile, but the whole shebang (well, not the big 13.1 shebang, the 3.1 shebang) with me.

I’m elated and on cloud nine.  TWICE since she has asked (which was Sunday) she has been down on the dreadmill, pounding out Week 1 of Couch to 5K.  We are looking at some spring races before she goes back to Michigan….I am so excited.  I’m so proud.  She wants to run with me.

  1. I so loved reading this. My son has expressed interest in running with me and so far, we have made it to 2 miles. He is 7! He is not a fan of the cold right now, but I am hoping to get back out with him as it starts to warm up. There is a 5k in April that I think he would enjoy. Many happy miles to you and your daughter!
